The Surroundings

Umbria is full of places with historical, archeological and religious interest. From Agriturismo La Fonte it is easy to reach any chosen itinerary in a day. Panicale, just two kilometres away, has an incredible medieval town centre. In the highest part the ancient Palazzo del Podestà is still awesome when seen from the square below. One can still see the house where Boldrino da Panicale, one of the most feared mercenary captains of the fourteenth century was born, as well as some paintings of Panicale’s most illustrious artist, Masolino da Panicale, who worked with and perhaps taught Masaccio. In the church of Sant’Agostino one can admire Pietro Perugino’s splendid fresco, “The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian”. Still in the Comune of Panicale a place to visit is the Sanctuary of Mongiovino, rich in art and architecture, and that of the Grondici, an important religious centre. Lake Trasimeno is a few minutes away by car. Here you can visit the castles around the lake, swim, enjoy acquatic sports such as water skiing, sailing and canoeing, and also take boat trips to the islands. There are also paths around the lake for trekking and mountain biking. Everywhere in Umbria is rich in history; the Etruscan fascination of Perugia, the medieval towns of Gubbio, Todi, Narni and many others, the Renaissance period of Città della Pieve where one may see one of the most beautiful frescos of Il Perugino. Art lovers may also admire works of Raphael in Perugia, Gozzoli in Montefalco, Signorelli in Orvieto and the splendid frescoes of Giotto in Assisi. One can also visit cities in Tuscany famous for their art - Florence, Arezzo, Siena and Lucca. Less than an hour away by car are the hot springs at Bagno Vignoni, San Casciano dei Bagni, Sant’Albino, Rapolano Terme, Bagni di San Filippo and Le Terme Francescane. There are also interesting gastronomical and wine tours, visiting some of the numerous wine and olive oil producers all around us. We must not forget that here we are in one of the most important regions for Extra Virgin DOP olive oil in Italy and the local wines have famous labels such as Colli del Trasimeno, Nobile di Montepulciano, Brunello di Montalcino, Sagrantino di Montefalco and Trebbiano.
